However, if you're not a subscriber to <a href="http://www.marthastewartweddings.com/">Martha Stewart</a> or <a href="http://readymade.com/">Ready Made</a>, <a href="http://www.etsy.com/category/weddings">Etsy</a> is the best place to look for less pricey, handmade options. I'm sure you're thinking, "a tea towel???!!??". I promise, though, it is the coolest tea towel I have ever seen, featuring some of the best graphic design I have encountered in a while. Of course, I became curious and googled the company. No surprise, <a href="http://www.ferm-living.com/">ferm LIVING</a> hails from Denmark. They offer wallpaper, tea towels, throw pillows and even mobiles.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmy0ED8GiluLtn_bFFcDKVHkYhi2GBsLdKy6YzhI5KMBUl3E1evqCrd5D11lT0E-aTHrQShqc5_NCoyAdjnk0VsJyIdnhlrLFBStQ2o-GHU4uX9MoEvw5fu6M1qWaPUehPxVSdltY1gpE/s1600-h/ferm.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 327px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmy0ED8GiluLtn_bFFcDKVHkYhi2GBsLdKy6YzhI5KMBUl3E1evqCrd5D11lT0E-aTHrQShqc5_NCoyAdjnk0VsJyIdnhlrLFBStQ2o-GHU4uX9MoEvw5fu6M1qWaPUehPxVSdltY1gpE/s400/ferm.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5424256455282414130" border="0" /></a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1869111671266964349.post-59841662915346371892010-01-04T00:37:00.000-08:002010-01-05T23:08:34.373-08:00Cake Stands are sweeeet! My husband's grandmother passed away this year. I was not related to her by blood, but I did know her for about ten years. Fran was a force of nature. I loved her as if she had been my own grandmother.<br /><br />The saddest yet sweetest part of her passing was that she died four days after her husband of 65 years. They truly were an amazing couple. After their bittersweet funeral, their daughter, son-in-law, four grandchildren, two grandchildren-in-law, one granddaughter-in-law to be, and three great-grandchildren (or Fran's Pasadena Punkins, as she like to call the little ones) went over to their home. We walked around the house we all knew so well, and picked out our favorites out of their belongings. I felt weird about it at first; almost like we were looting. Then, it occurred to me that we would remember them every time we told a friend, acquaintance or even any future children, "This used to be Fran and Bob's".<br /><br />I'll stop with the storytelling now because I'm tearing up. I'll just say that one of the items I selected was the sweetest little cake stand. Fran had a weakness for old-fashioned, ivory ceramics, and this stand was one of her best. It sits on our dining table right now, waiting for its own place. Sometimes I think I should find one. Sometimes, I think it's nice that I have to move it around every day because that means I remember her daily.<br /><br />Anyway, whether it's a family heirloom or a new acquisition soon to become part of the family history, everyone should own one of these beautiful pieces. I have trolled the web for some current favorites. Honestly, does anything in this world deserve a throne more than dessert? I think not.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ33EQd5vRXtH1dtrORYPcAG7SlA7C6Wt5Omfk9uzGvmbhpXww4eyRtS0lpsG8A9x0z-23AvuwZasZVhVP-FJeb16x9pkcxxPVkd_Xn3aRgxliLPNB0J4dgNijLvTjqUwdtJGcXkQ5b20/s1600-h/marthastewart.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; In my defense, I have been rather busy. In the spirit of New Year's resolutions however, it's coming back better than ever!<br /><br />Given the long break, I thought I should open with a bang. Candice Eley, the brain behind <a href="http://fightthefondant.blogspot.com/">Fight the Fondant</a> (and my new sister-in-law) was married this past November 7th to yes...you guessed it...my brother-in-law, Mr. JT (the other one). Here are a few pictures of the lovely event by <a href="http://www.iheartas.com/index2.php">Aaron Thompson of AS Photography</a> in San Diego.<br /><br />The wedding was simply glorious and so much fun. All the details were absolutely perfect. As true DIY, fashionable hipsters, Jeff and Candice imbued their celebration with a lot of personal touches that perfectly reflected themselves and their families. Do visit <a href="http://fightthefondant.blogspot.com/">Fight the Fondant</a> for details and plenty of anecdotes.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjch3sMAq4BLzUopA-gi0EdVmOI6eAp701-xAUwBXzO_DIQ6MdM0bDl63LEHTr27FLzY4e-pvwAfCmTzqD7DvtgORuwWgM0c5E4DjI3oFFfsFtna8Acl_vwBmHE4XQrUD8XcqgTCzlLBcI/s1600-h/Marston_House_Wedding_Candice_Jeff_03.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjch3sMAq4BLzUopA-gi0EdVmOI6eAp701-xAUwBXzO_DIQ6MdM0bDl63LEHTr27FLzY4e-pvwAfCmTzqD7DvtgORuwWgM0c5E4DjI3oFFfsFtna8Acl_vwBmHE4XQrUD8XcqgTCzlLBcI/s400/Marston_House_Wedding_Candice_Jeff_03.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5422745177666542770" border="0" /></a><br />Here comes the bride in all her glory. This gaggle of nieces (do three little girls constitute a gaggle?) sported headpieces and baskets made my the Maid of Honor, and mother of the ringleader in front. They promptly started emptying their baskets about thirty feet behind where everyone was sitting. I enticed them to keep their petals from my hiding place in the back, which, of course, they took to heart. No fear, once they got to the front, the groom's brother-in-law, and father of two of the girls, told them to make sure they got all the petals out. The girls stood in front of the altar for a full two to three minutes while making sure to rid those baskets of every last vestige of flowers. It was a precious sight.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9pChilQhaohpm6lba-npkk42x3dLeEf-kbIPjNb5pNTnXe08t0vsGJTU7pGB-l6Yec6DbkHckPoA39x8izml1DE8h3wx4_bo1nJ60KuhSZtyZz0DWdFpz6iVl5hx-kuXhwRUz86ELmZU/s1600-h/Marston_House_Wedding_Candice_Jeff_06.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9pChilQhaohpm6lba-npkk42x3dLeEf-kbIPjNb5pNTnXe08t0vsGJTU7pGB-l6Yec6DbkHckPoA39x8izml1DE8h3wx4_bo1nJ60KuhSZtyZz0DWdFpz6iVl5hx-kuXhwRUz86ELmZU/s400/Marston_House_Wedding_Candice_Jeff_06.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5422744908642067074" border="0" /></a><br />The <a href="https://www.sandiegohistory.org/marston_house.html">Marston House in San Diego's Balboa Park</a> was the perfect setting for the ceremony. So, don’t you want to remember it? Don’t you want it to be a day that really stands out in every way whatsoever? Being a music aficionado, I’ve always been disappointed by music picked for wedding ceremonies. I know that there are traditions for a reason, but aren’t we all tired of hearing Wagner’s “Here Comes the Bride?” Even most of the secondary traditional choices are still somewhat stuffy. I love Pachelbel’s “Canon in D” and Handel’s “Air” or “The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba” as much as the next person, but these songs don’t have nearly the personal connection that other, more recent tracks might. And, let’s not kid ourselves, just because you’re pondering using Norah Jones’ “Come Away With Me” doesn’t necessarily mean you’re straying from the pack. Though only a scant six years old, it’s now a wedding standard. When it comes right down to it, most people don’t really know where to start in regard to wedding music. Websites and magazines don’t seem to give most of us any better advice as I’ve found they spout the same old cliché music we’ve always heard.<br /><br />I’ve come up with a few tracks that can act as prelude, processional or recessional songs (I’ll designate, but I find that most are really interchangeable for any of those purposes) for the more discerning and modern music fan. You can call it a playlist for a hipster wedding ceremony if you like, but you’ll be sure to remember your special day for a long time to come.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj4hyphenhyphen7Wq3dYcvFTsevIbbVPVEVqohXz-KQS268swSDLpH6y3ytRYEWNxGg2L_ZtFepXXwsSqUSl27Dv6J6J7Jstvru6YFqMZEM_C90XV3bDQ6mj2y1blDMypZmZD9Q0YY9C-sawJZVKcg/s1600-h/ring_bear.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 276px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj4hyphenhyphen7Wq3dYcvFTsevIbbVPVEVqohXz-KQS268swSDLpH6y3ytRYEWNxGg2L_ZtFepXXwsSqUSl27Dv6J6J7Jstvru6YFqMZEM_C90XV3bDQ6mj2y1blDMypZmZD9Q0YY9C-sawJZVKcg/s400/ring_bear.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309244881332333250" border="0" /></a><span style="font-weight: bold;">Processional:</span><br /><br /><a href="http://inkfancy.com/music/Delibes-FLOWER%20DUET%20FROM%20%27LAKME%27.mp3">Delibes- “Flower Duet” from the Opera, Lakmé</a><br />This may seem like more of a traditional choice, and that’s why I’m leading off with it. And while it does appear on some traditional wedding music lists, it is still widely overlooked. Conceived by French composer Léo Delibes, “The Flower Duet” is a delicate and airy number finding two dulcet female voices intertwining like songbirds dancing around with ribbons twixt their beaks. It’s a perfect choice for the arrival of the bride, not overpowering in any way, and ideal for spring or summer nuptials.<br /><br /><a href="http://inkfancy.com/music/001%20-%20Percy%20Faith%20-%20Theme%20from%20A%20Summer%20Place.mp3">“Theme from a Summer Place” (written by Max Steiner)</a><br />When asked what a girl had to do to impress him, Oz of <i>Buffy the Vampire Slayer</i> responded that it involved a feather boa and the “Theme from a Summer Place.” Whether you use Percy Faith’s original recording or a later more revved up version by the Ventures is up to you, but this is a gorgeous piece of music, not to be overlooked. (And use an instrumental version, so as not to distract. Then you can simply sing the words “Theme from a Summer Place” over and over again like Jasper in <i>The Simpsons</i>).<br /><br /><a href="http://inkfancy.com/music/14%20Wild%20Horses.mp3">“Wild Horses” by the Sundays</a><br />I know this is a classic from the Rolling Stones, but the Sundays’ version is far more relaxed and thus better suited for wedding music. It emphasizes both the commitment and overwhelming feelings of love involved in the ritual.<br /><a href="http://inkfancy.com/music/03%20Stara%CC%81lfur.mp3"><br />“Starálfur” by Sigur Rós</a><br />I’d venture to say this is perhaps my favorite choice for a modern processional. It has everything a song needs to provide a bride’s dramatic and romantic entrance: sweeping strings, subtle vocals and steady cadence. Not to mention it’s a tearjerker. That’s why it was used in <i>The Life Aquatic</i> and <i>The Girl in the Café</i>. There are several moments in the song that would be suitable for the bride’s procession, so it’s both foolproof and able to be timed and choreographed should you have an experienced DJ providing music.<br /><br /><a href="http://inkfancy.com/music/08%20Falling%20Is%20Like%20This.mp3">“Falling Is Like This” by Ani DiFranco</a><br />The lyrics in this song are interpretable. Ani has never been one to write a straightforward love song. But that doesn’t make it any less pretty or meaningful. As the song title may already suggest to you, Ani describes love as an uncontrollable and overwhelming emotion, which can be fleeting. Normally, DiFranco’s songs are slightly aggressive and growly, but “Falling” is easily the most subtly delicate and moving songs she’s written and performed. It’s definitely a song for a realist’s wedding as, though it may discuss the ecstasy of love, it also hints at its downfalls.<br /><br /><a href="http://inkfancy.com/music/2-05%20In%20Your%20Eyes.m4a">“In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel</a><br />Come on, how can this song not be mentioned? Especially for anyone who grew up watching John Cusack movies. I almost didn’t include it, simply because it felt like a “gimme.” The intro alone is perfect for that walk down the aisle. You could also substitute it for Jeffrey Gaines’ acoustic version, which is also quite good, and a bit less busy, but I prefer the piano and African drums, myself.<br /><br /><a href="http://inkfancy.com/music/02%20Naked%20As%20We%20Came.mp3">“Naked As We Came” by Iron & Wine</a><br />This pastoral acoustic number works on several levels. First of all, it’s simply a very touching song with diaphanously whispered lyrics by Sam Beam, which always makes for a great wedding intro. But it’s also about lifelong love, and almost to a fault. Beam utters lines that speak of a relationship leading to the grave, which may not be the perfect choice for most couples, but in the end, isn’t that what a wedding is really all about? “Til death do us part?” So, in the end, it’s ideal.<br /><br /><a href="http://inkfancy.com/music/03%20In%20The%20Aeroplane%20Over%20The%20Sea.mp3">“In the Aeroplane Over the Sea” by Neutral Milk Hotel</a><br />In that same vein, we have Neutral Milk Hotel’s acoustic ballad. Sure, Jeff Mangum’s voice is a little more abrasive than Sam Beam’s. And sure, it’s part of a song cycle dedicated to Anne Frank. But, I have never heard such earnest and realistically romantic lyrics in my life. So, for real indie cred, use this track. If you want a version of the song that might be more palatable to the older generations, use Matt Pond PA’s more delicate cover.<br /><br /><a href="http://inkfancy.com/music/09%20Be%20Mine.mp3">“Be Mine” by R.E.M.</a><br />Though drenched in Peter Buck’s wall of fuzzy guitar noise, I’ve always wanted this song to be one played at my wedding. Michael Stipe’s lyrics, historically, have been cryptic and indecipherable, but in this track from <i>New Adventures in Hi-Fi</i>, he writes the most straightforward and romantic lyrics of his career. The repeated chorus of “You & Me” would bring a tear to anyone’s eye, and he only ups the ante with the apropos lyrics of “I’ll want the finger with the ring.” The verses in the song even act as vows, so the song could even be played in place of them, which might spice up the ceremony a little. “And if you make me your religion / I’ll give you all you will need / I’ll be the drawing of your breath / I’ll be the cup if you should bleed.”<br /><br /><a href="http://inkfancy.com/music/01%20The%20Blowers%20Daughter.mp3">“The Blower’s Daughter” by Damien Rice</a><br />This is the perfect solution for the modern indie kid with panache for the past. Irish folkie Rice pours his heart out with regularity, but never so much as on this earnest track. The repeated chorus of “I can’t take my eyes off of you,” hearkening back to Frankie Valli’s oft-used romantic number, sets the mood exquisitely. Plus, the cello is quite possibly the most romantic instrument in history. But, make sure your DJ or music supervisor cuts it off before the last line, “til I find somebody new.” That might put a damper on things.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOoiltCJW2ivdoZ7tkcuEPFWyJk9KVVVUCIU58PP5rtkZfiUSYmVf0hjaDvRaQCJvpy1H2QBKl3sgYqZ2smUBuhu323JYGHM7UMuY7HVOnAAOZ_Z6bS7PE4ow0jokjnwIgrstUDK_snlU/s1600-h/firstkiss.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 276px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOoiltCJW2ivdoZ7tkcuEPFWyJk9KVVVUCIU58PP5rtkZfiUSYmVf0hjaDvRaQCJvpy1H2QBKl3sgYqZ2smUBuhu323JYGHM7UMuY7HVOnAAOZ_Z6bS7PE4ow0jokjnwIgrstUDK_snlU/s400/firstkiss.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309244880551250962" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Prelude:</span><br /><a href="http://inkfancy.com/music/07%20Lay%20Lady%20Lay.mp3"><br />“Lay Lady Lay” by Magnet (with Gemma Hayes)</a><br />Here’s another one where I’ve chosen a cover, one that most purists would find sacrilegious, as the original is by Bob Dylan, but I really think this is a fun and romantic cover. First of all, it’s done as a sultry duet, and secondly it’s a tad more sinuous than the Dylan original. If you have conservative family members, you might want to avoid this sexy track, but since when have wedding guests (other than people like me) ever paid attention to the lyrics of background music? I know that hearing this song in preparation for my own wedding would make me feel pretty darn good.<br /><a href="http://inkfancy.com/music/02%20The%20Dress%20Looks%20Nice%20On%20You.mp3"><br />“The Dress Looks Nice on You” by Sufjan Stevens</a><br />Most people might not want banjo music playing at their wedding, but most people aren’t me. Stevens manages to make the banjo both subtle and romantic at the same time in this whispery track. The title and lyrics could be a slight nod to a wedding, though it was originally written as a remembrance of how the author’s girlfriend taught him what to say to ladies. Then again, that might be even more appropriate.<br /><br /><a href="http://inkfancy.com/music/2-08%20True%20Love%20Will%20Find%20You%20in%20the%20End.mp3">“True Love Will Find You in the End” by Daniel Johnston</a><br />This is really a song for those who haven’t yet found love, but it can also act as the celebration of finally finding it, or it finding you! Another tearjerker of a song, filled with hope and tinged with a little sadness, you could easily substitute it with covers by either Beck or my personal favorite, Jeff Tweedy, depending on your tastes.<br /><a href="http://inkfancy.com/music/24%20I%27m%20In%20Love%20With%20A%20Girl.mp3"><br />“I’m In Love With a Girl” by Big Star</a><br />It’s a short song to be sure, but it packs a lot of punch in a few minutes and a few lyrics. In its’ entirety, “I’m in love with a girl / Finest girl in the world / I didn’t know I could feel this way / Think about her all the time / Always on my mind / I didn’t know about love / All that a man should do is true / I didn’t know this could happen to me.” It’s a wonderful song by a great band.<br /><a href="http://inkfancy.com/music/1-12%20Thirteen.mp3"><br />“Thirteen” by Elliott Smith</a><br />This is another song by the aforementioned Big Star, but covered here by Elliott Smith. I would particularly recommend this song for couples that were grade school or high school sweethearts as it tells a tale of young love and rebellion. But, anyone with a strong sense of nostalgia can get behind the track and its mentions of the Stones, the community pool and getting tickets for the school dance. The “Ooooh’s” after each verse are magical.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xTgAscp1nE">Magnetic Fields- “Nothing Matters When We’re Dancing”</a><br />“Nothing Matters When We’re Dancing” comes from a huge compilation of love songs by this Boston band, but it tends to stand out. To me, true love is measured by how much you can block out bad times and questionable surroundings by just being near your partner. That’s what this song says to me in its lush and melodic way. And ultimately, amidst all the chaos of friends and family, it really does feel just like the two of you.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjECUjluMM_4YWQ6fjPQXZdyaXpkEShLxQSc4jywtf890NMN5V_PyCv0Cu1fNhujyWQr8GMw_rCgK32gD_in4V86I1kLADFsquv_UF3DP9eQk_ZUW5dbPhdJTYzogYusXV0TUNJiwB120/s1600-h/alldone.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 276px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjECUjluMM_4YWQ6fjPQXZdyaXpkEShLxQSc4jywtf890NMN5V_PyCv0Cu1fNhujyWQr8GMw_rCgK32gD_in4V86I1kLADFsquv_UF3DP9eQk_ZUW5dbPhdJTYzogYusXV0TUNJiwB120/s400/alldone.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309244876207787298" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Recessional:</span><br /><br /><a href="http://inkfancy.com/music/04%20The%20Bleeding%20Heart%20Show.mp3">“The Bleeding Heart Show” by the New Pornographers</a><br />Again, any and all of the above songs could be interchangeable for different parts of the ceremony, but if I could soundtrack my own wedding, that is, have a DJ perfectly cue up songs as if we were in our own little movie, this would be my only choice for the Recessional. Listen to the song. I’d have the music swell with the “Oooh’s” during the kiss and pronouncement of marriage, and then dance back down the aisle to the infectious “Hey La’s.” There is no way that anyone attending would ever forget it. As an added bonus you could play it again during the reception and lead all of your guests in the final chorus. I think my friend Emily sent me a link to his site a year, or so, ago. He's apparently all the rage now, having done the photography for the latest ad campaign for Discovery Channel's <a href="http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/deadliestcatch/deadliestcatch.html"><span style="font-style: italic;">Deadliest Catch</span></a>. You know how it goes, do some work for Discovery Channel and you can no longer leave the house due to the hordes of fans pounding on your door. Anyway, famous or not, Corey's work is simply breathtaking, in a very quirky way. The following photo certainly falls on the breathtaking side. I'm not sure if she's his wife, sister or friend. Regardless, you can't help but stare at such ethereal beauty.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqNTToaLZ6qNNkZFusD2BYwIj6-KyvzrZ1ciHQ2HQKAfoJxuAh_aKyVHfPwYc8I_ao4L5zlOSPW_ip8pny9Rrl4hx955BhjJ_Lt76Sic4y4x2sdTQGIvNUnYH4f99FpjjemsLaJnxzASU/s1600-h/Picture+4.png"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 295px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqNTToaLZ6qNNkZFusD2BYwIj6-KyvzrZ1ciHQ2HQKAfoJxuAh_aKyVHfPwYc8I_ao4L5zlOSPW_ip8pny9Rrl4hx955BhjJ_Lt76Sic4y4x2sdTQGIvNUnYH4f99FpjjemsLaJnxzASU/s400/Picture+4.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5294745428370288866" border="0" /></a>This particular photo has been featured in several papers and magazines. I certainly harbor a fondness for it for obvious reasons: a) it's ridiculously charming b) I have a cat c) I purchased the same horse's head for a <span style="font-style: italic;">Godfather</span> inspired Halloween costume a few years ago...<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_6Rc63JJzAz_KAByPAGYCpyqhQ1KBzi9U1l7ZEX6sPf1dvYC8eGkAEIjPtn6c6xO_esdV5Tq15GjrHUPr3CqHBBVfkp7SQZSQzqwBq2VVTnsDJYHTG3clCwPz3Ruy1Sg_Ut0X7Ok8fvQ/s1600-h/Picture+1.png"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 295px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_6Rc63JJzAz_KAByPAGYCpyqhQ1KBzi9U1l7ZEX6sPf1dvYC8eGkAEIjPtn6c6xO_esdV5Tq15GjrHUPr3CqHBBVfkp7SQZSQzqwBq2VVTnsDJYHTG3clCwPz3Ruy1Sg_Ut0X7Ok8fvQ/s400/Picture+1.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5294745336959693346" border="0" /></a>While Corey is best known for his photography aboard fishing boats in Norway and the Bering Sea, he has a knack for off-the-wall pieces. Modern calligraphers are turning out charming work that thrives in the beauty of inconsistency. While I designed and printed my own wedding invitations back in 2004, I didn't trust my penmanship skills enough to address them. For that, I enlisted Rebecca Trawick of <a href="http://bluebirdstudios.com/index.html">Bluebird Studios</a>. Not only was she prompt and professional but her work was simply beautiful. As if her lettering weren't engaging enough, she also creates charismatic collages out of vintage, found ephemera and her own illustrations.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXJZbuZEHVwqJLUvpUUJ4lbovfcjdwkNF6vYMT0q6rH8g53WGGdftLqI3hkJkiM9axyLS95tpBjQ85CMiXYkYkE8dsMhQ9sxu9rmSmDgH9bPoOL5cAPbGPK3dj8wYOi7jVFfN4T_UYVxU/s1600-h/lettering3.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 316px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXJZbuZEHVwqJLUvpUUJ4lbovfcjdwkNF6vYMT0q6rH8g53WGGdftLqI3hkJkiM9axyLS95tpBjQ85CMiXYkYkE8dsMhQ9sxu9rmSmDgH9bPoOL5cAPbGPK3dj8wYOi7jVFfN4T_UYVxU/s400/lettering3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5290985190003164866" border="0" /></a><a href="http://www.may-belle.com/index.html">Maybelle Imasa-Stukuls</a> is the creative genius behind most of the calligraphy work seen in the pages of <a href="http://marthastewartweddings.com">Martha Stewart Weddings</a>. I immediately fell in love with his camera obscura work. It's hard not to. Now that I have had the pleasure of visiting the Camara Oscura in Habana's Plaza Vieja, I wonder if he was inspired by it as a child. Though originally from Cuba, Morell now resides in Boston, where he is a Professor at the <a href="http://www.massart.edu/">Massachusetts College of Art and Design</a>.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfhnm1v4JfKM1uuMeYWpDAKAtenUXNVxtWdQkZEg3enZOSyiXWagMrqJHRGvj-47Q6g2HdupT_aSfR-k6l7B74JTAeqAlD22ZPjgHbSNBcTwpiKel9_nmT_ELCNZDs3AWx00Asbyk59QE/s1600-h/Camera_obscura2.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 248px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfhnm1v4JfKM1uuMeYWpDAKAtenUXNVxtWdQkZEg3enZOSyiXWagMrqJHRGvj-47Q6g2HdupT_aSfR-k6l7B74JTAeqAlD22ZPjgHbSNBcTwpiKel9_nmT_ELCNZDs3AWx00Asbyk59QE/s400/Camera_obscura2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285436398339639154" border="0" /></a>In a camera obscura, light passes through a hole and projects an image from the outside onto a surface within the "dark chamber". The image, however, is upside-down. The use of a mirror can turn the image right-side up but what's the fun in that? That's what cameras are for. The first two images above are of the Paris Pantheon and Manhattan. The two below are seasonal images of Central Park in New York.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPIced_Y1TMga0-ZpePu-3caNEMJMYtpVborXo8VLrnSxUo5ITYqvD0XtY9blB3bVFeIncGXzDB5H9efIuAUwRH0RmZ06F8LxhpfmxI0hvB9ObvBi110qvnWC_nKlSIvxpwLlj846J3pc/s1600-h/camera_park.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 158px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPIced_Y1TMga0-ZpePu-3caNEMJMYtpVborXo8VLrnSxUo5ITYqvD0XtY9blB3bVFeIncGXzDB5H9efIuAUwRH0RmZ06F8LxhpfmxI0hvB9ObvBi110qvnWC_nKlSIvxpwLlj846J3pc/s400/camera_park.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285432891549318882" border="0" /></a><br />Though well known for his images of upside-down urban scapes in lonely rooms, Morell also has a vast portfolio of more traditional photography. Perhaps my favorite theme of his is books. He plays extensively with texture, scale and of course, shadows to create rather arresting images.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzPpSOkgYNRQ2DiwvpxGSE7DZj7Rm5xBC0Q3dm72sfGFThtMClvzZ-lTfMo9dtUmzhRjnAbaF1Oko6utvm8N7NXkThwko6xOZ7_r9tOMxYHqV_WS27EkN0GIU9Ll2kqwB8QwcwcgMpQ3M/s1600-h/books01_dictionary.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 318px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzPpSOkgYNRQ2DiwvpxGSE7DZj7Rm5xBC0Q3dm72sfGFThtMClvzZ-lTfMo9dtUmzhRjnAbaF1Oko6utvm8N7NXkThwko6xOZ7_r9tOMxYHqV_WS27EkN0GIU9Ll2kqwB8QwcwcgMpQ3M/s400/books01_dictionary.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285432887418394226" border="0" /></a>Morell has even created an illustrated version of Carroll's <span style="font-style: italic;">Alice in Wonderland</span>. I would sit down with my little library of Seattle Brides and Martha Stewart magazines and visit every single link to any vendor that looked even remotely interesting. I would then systematically and unmercifully narrow down the choices down to two or three per market, who I would then contact. When looking for photographers, only one survived my cut-throat attack: <a href="http://www.hansonphotography.com/">Bradley Hanson. </a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho2hJn-HBueT9te4GPANKf09ZbdjAKPxO2H7a_L5MuDvtmxg2KPx0GdGOCO7c7rMmb1C_o_nMjKSTAexD1Pa5Kgy_sbflrizLNMV3YkvqbMqGdFgWc4bF_HVTqE4PumyAwk4VV73tBLhY/s1600-h/097.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 274px; height: 396px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho2hJn-HBueT9te4GPANKf09ZbdjAKPxO2H7a_L5MuDvtmxg2KPx0GdGOCO7c7rMmb1C_o_nMjKSTAexD1Pa5Kgy_sbflrizLNMV3YkvqbMqGdFgWc4bF_HVTqE4PumyAwk4VV73tBLhY/s400/097.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5278412198975087074" border="0" /></a><br />Luckily, he turned out to be as charming in person as he did online. We first met with Bradley at Torrefazione in Pioneer Square, now Cafe Umbria. He immediately brought out albums from previous weddings and proceeded to essentially turn into an overly excited child. His eyes turned into saucers as he flipped through the photos and explained why he had taken each one. His elation was contagious and extremely refreshing. With just one wordless look, we agreed he was the one. We told him we were hoping for an August wedding since it was to take place outdoors. Though a full year in advance, he mentioned only having one Saturday open, the 14th. Our date was set.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsyUePCs8FVFFvDKA4dot5tAcWIyVeF80SFWjMMCr1deqWc_w9_wpsUU5RSbdaZgFcfsDXJYlc-rTyNsB0exAZ96xzMDg_te63dErLTjUyP_L_oxXfk4jfF0HB3moZHip9deq_oZN_B-U/s1600-h/079.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 274px; height: 396px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsyUePCs8FVFFvDKA4dot5tAcWIyVeF80SFWjMMCr1deqWc_w9_wpsUU5RSbdaZgFcfsDXJYlc-rTyNsB0exAZ96xzMDg_te63dErLTjUyP_L_oxXfk4jfF0HB3moZHip9deq_oZN_B-U/s400/079.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5278412193176143714" border="0" /></a><br />Bradley showed up bright and early on our wedding day and took pictures of anything and everything. You wouldn't have known it though, for he was amazingly inconspicuous. He was also pretty wily when it came to getting candid photos. At one point, he told us that he needed to get some more film from his car, before disappearing. As soon as we tried to steal a kiss, he jumped out of a tree to catch us in the act. Perhaps the most compelling evidence of his professional nature is the fact that he turned down a dance with Emily, one of the very attractive single ladies at our wedding. Since 2004, three of my friends and colleagues have had Bradley photograph their weddings. I will never get tired of recommending him. <a href="http://terich.org/wedding/">Here's a link to some of our favorite wedding photos by Bradley.</a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvMxcYDbTZ0I8d0yVdOiIiXgn6QT01kBrvM6zzpysyJ_PVajST7OPA5nWFN1U_xfdlp_UVZkz0yvp-uvvBi0teI63sOboUdCTKowFPz21AWUywkY7aAJdGr7pygomfUBywpLAfLePNSms/s1600-h/082.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 396px; height: 274px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvMxcYDbTZ0I8d0yVdOiIiXgn6QT01kBrvM6zzpysyJ_PVajST7OPA5nWFN1U_xfdlp_UVZkz0yvp-uvvBi0teI63sOboUdCTKowFPz21AWUywkY7aAJdGr7pygomfUBywpLAfLePNSms/s400/082.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5278412199353068738" border="0" /></a><br />As if it weren't enough, Bradley<span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span> has been featured numerous times on Seattle Bride and other publications, such as The Stranger and Rolling Stone, <a href="http://www.hansonphotography.com/index_inprint.htm">for his rock and editorial imagery.</a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBBKSdl6IftQ1xl_iXQBUfRfMcAp7yEhw96nZgEjdqPhZbdXQ1XegBPxGG8-nYkwznIGNcwnCi28LPhWrPziRWgy6WxnGhs24dbnU9qJW6tq_DVmCJlgzvHfRtnp7Z0cdpuzp3Gu3p3ho/s1600-h/music_neo16_ianmoore1.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 360px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBBKSdl6IftQ1xl_iXQBUfRfMcAp7yEhw96nZgEjdqPhZbdXQ1XegBPxGG8-nYkwznIGNcwnCi28LPhWrPziRWgy6WxnGhs24dbnU9qJW6tq_DVmCJlgzvHfRtnp7Z0cdpuzp3Gu3p3ho/s400/music_neo16_ianmoore1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5278436931923900978" border="0" /></a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1869111671266964349.post-53205932046094667742008-12-07T09:56:00.001-08:002008-12-07T13:31:02.489-08:00Akiko Taniguchi<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBDRmYELFT6oa5S8Cj6tuUf4rxc89ktG24hbzo8r348LwvmtVwQG751RokzrRZrNihbGZTmt7KL2vBRB4MTdM0toX9pcmRmkgVZcZFKuzZROI9OaSSHaUIkqRZGPHYlVuTywbkWodDbTw/s1600-h/taniguchi-occurence_of_the_surface.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBDRmYELFT6oa5S8Cj6tuUf4rxc89ktG24hbzo8r348LwvmtVwQG751RokzrRZrNihbGZTmt7KL2vBRB4MTdM0toX9pcmRmkgVZcZFKuzZROI9OaSSHaUIkqRZGPHYlVuTywbkWodDbTw/s400/taniguchi-occurence_of_the_surface.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5277127646986428082" border="0" /></a><span style="font-style: italic;"> Occurrence on the Surface, 2006</span><br /><br />Back in 2004, when Matt and I both used to work in Pioneer Square in Seattle, we made it a habit to explore the numerous art galleries in the area after a quick lunch. Our favorite was <a href="http://www.davidsongalleries.com/index.php">Davidson Galleries.</a> A few months before our August wedding, we came across the work of print artist Akiko Taniguchi while on one of said walks. We promptly fell in love with it and promised to "think about it", then proceeded to forget about it, or at least I did. When two weeks before the wedding Matt boasted of having the perfect present for me, I wracked my brains for what he could have found that would have him feeling so confident. With a sneaking suspicion, I walked to Davidson at lunchtime. I saw Cara (now the Director of Contemporary Prints at the gallery) marched over and started: "I don't know if you remember me but...". The guilty expression on her face said it all. I just told her I was going to pick out another print and that she need not betray my fiance's confidence. I just wanted her to to steer me in another direction if I happened to select the same one as him. She nodded reluctantly with her eyes locked on the floor. I didn't mind knowing, but found it rather funny instead. It wasn't her fault I know my husband so well.<br /><br />This is the piece he got for me. It's an etching and collagraph called <span style="font-style: italic;">Mother Earth</span> from an edition of 20. It reminded me of mitosis when I first saw it.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTDUfYsLHFoPpAezgogR3lJETLu6wu-tHhe-tEfqK3Lxqz8UsFe7c5Ydzra8AdD6QfVcQk_3d3n8nzkMtcFq5tRbfockFqY9xb7xWto1mm5I2vbS3lgj-7Zd1iB_eGTQ0_jeIe0Qc3Iok/s1600-h/taniguchi-mothearth.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 307px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTDUfYsLHFoPpAezgogR3lJETLu6wu-tHhe-tEfqK3Lxqz8UsFe7c5Ydzra8AdD6QfVcQk_3d3n8nzkMtcFq5tRbfockFqY9xb7xWto1mm5I2vbS3lgj-7Zd1iB_eGTQ0_jeIe0Qc3Iok/s400/taniguchi-mothearth.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5277109396842396242" border="0" /></a><br />The piece I gifted Matt is <span style="font-style: italic;">Universe</span> (or the Orange as we normally call it). Aside from collagraph and etching, she also uses mezzotint, chine colle, dry point, and lithography, among others. Her editions are fairly small, from 10 to 30 prints. Her print sizes also range from about 4" x 4" to 24" x 36". Akiko doesn't seem to have a website but her work can be seen on quite a few online galleries, <a href="http://www.davidsongalleries.com/index.php">Davidson</a> being one of the best. They have quite a selection of her work, ranging in price from $150 to $1000. While browsing this bibliophile's paradise, we fell in love with an art piece at the Basil Hallward Art Gallery, located in the <a href="http://www.powells.com/storetour/mappy.html">Pearl Room</a> of the bookstore. Perhaps our favorite aspect of the entire piece is the signature, which the artist saw fit to follow with the line, Age 23.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXv6s3-Y-qXmSjs_PO9PoefMh-zFTF3ONkfrFJ64UignXMC-CXs01stDjVsRL8zx-_s1NQHxDNcGmwq5vs87XfzqWFj1kvDkldBd23VXwYV3NT9yd1G_ChjUgt1Zc_6EXMkhdb7ghjmYc/s1600-h/nipellina.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 220px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXv6s3-Y-qXmSjs_PO9PoefMh-zFTF3ONkfrFJ64UignXMC-CXs01stDjVsRL8zx-_s1NQHxDNcGmwq5vs87XfzqWFj1kvDkldBd23VXwYV3NT9yd1G_ChjUgt1Zc_6EXMkhdb7ghjmYc/s400/nipellina.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276878314187862194" border="0" /></a><br />Ever since then, I have made it a point to visit <a href="http://www.kellytunstall.com/">Kelly's website</a> on a somewhat regular basis to see what she's up to. Now Age 28, Kelly is still painting her ladies and recording her age with each one. I guess the signature makes sense when you learn that she uses her pieces as a sort of diary.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWwxpY4_i_OswKGbEeiSlC9RCZBh5xEf3_LzddnLL5xVIc-uSZzhdboNy_pAZViA5xW_K-049sHupzKDxSE7_mnRS-SNAne2972z8sbrATk7F2-Kz_ZW6cse6422Hc7lQTVFxXbUeCCVY/s1600-h/kingsqueens_30.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 303px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWwxpY4_i_OswKGbEeiSlC9RCZBh5xEf3_LzddnLL5xVIc-uSZzhdboNy_pAZViA5xW_K-049sHupzKDxSE7_mnRS-SNAne2972z8sbrATk7F2-Kz_ZW6cse6422Hc7lQTVFxXbUeCCVY/s400/kingsqueens_30.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276884492360690882" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX2jaBGTQ9Y-EuD5VcIYgqCAClyThw37sV_Z3_AdBGzWg7-TEgeEWOpq3iaEBU3FC_avJ8u06_GOJ1GOrEuDoI6eySKaMSwS5NFUsvlVt3FlLThhEFLNfvlNkXWg6Pbd0NH7s8xjqIXEA/s1600-h/saints_and_sinners_2006_13_sancta_marina.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 232px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX2jaBGTQ9Y-EuD5VcIYgqCAClyThw37sV_Z3_AdBGzWg7-TEgeEWOpq3iaEBU3FC_avJ8u06_GOJ1GOrEuDoI6eySKaMSwS5NFUsvlVt3FlLThhEFLNfvlNkXWg6Pbd0NH7s8xjqIXEA/s400/saints_and_sinners_2006_13_sancta_marina.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276879337112804098" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAyIrTVUwjNwTHTCwnWNY0ZZ9f5ZR_2HTJPTA4z5vxuPuzkVJxjsZz3Q-6GMbUvaHO0fGqoN8K_WPCLnKeQUbqLfQ82LBQAQJu-LLCB8zkE9M4EpHud8kg5Qdby1L6fZ-uGiFHmGLhTqs/s1600-h/madeup_sm.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 290px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAyIrTVUwjNwTHTCwnWNY0ZZ9f5ZR_2HTJPTA4z5vxuPuzkVJxjsZz3Q-6GMbUvaHO0fGqoN8K_WPCLnKeQUbqLfQ82LBQAQJu-LLCB8zkE9M4EpHud8kg5Qdby1L6fZ-uGiFHmGLhTqs/s400/madeup_sm.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276879330226281170" border="0" /></a><br /><br />You can also see her work at the <a href="http://www.sfhoteldesarts.com/index.php">Hotel des Arts</a> in San Franciso which features a number of <a href="http://www.sfhoteldesarts.com/paintedrooms.php">"painted rooms"</a> designed by San Francisco artists. I was flipping through it when a really cool image (<a href="http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/features/2008/12/winslet200812">not Kate Winslet's fannie</a>) caught my eye. There on the "Hot Type" page were a couple of, clearly vintage, <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.artsandarchitecture.com/index.html">Arts and Architecture</a> </span>magazine covers. They were just beautiful, in their obviously mid-century, yet oh- so-relevant grandeur, or shall I say, simplicity.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1-LZ6tCYQZ8yWf-GFqBArZDvku6Nurn29BhXoqXL_twfZZf-XscRLhzVUk1TyphM1ZnXf_xLEKyTrwi5A_msEA1wZg6nUSh0pRMm7rLNtQxqbtEhIBK1c-4LHWeax9Edbxrt_9SnRX6o/s1600-h/c0vers_1957_1958.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 314px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1-LZ6tCYQZ8yWf-GFqBArZDvku6Nurn29BhXoqXL_twfZZf-XscRLhzVUk1TyphM1ZnXf_xLEKyTrwi5A_msEA1wZg6nUSh0pRMm7rLNtQxqbtEhIBK1c-4LHWeax9Edbxrt_9SnRX6o/s400/c0vers_1957_1958.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276162501463406274" border="0" /></a><br />I didn't even have time to read the column but I did manage to write "arts and architecture vintage covers" down before getting my teeth drilled on for half an hour. I remembered the incident as I was ruminating on what to post today and decided to Google the magazine. As it turns out, <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.artsandarchitecture.com/index.html">Arts and Architecture</a> </span>magazine was published from 1945 to 1967. It mainly dealt with residential design but also considered culture, politics, architecture, art and music.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTbVBqEjkEqO8qvtcZl4Hbq4PVB8KlczCnOis9ptjrAx_FKQctVm8flpHdgqcKrIA2EOwOK-w-QI6RuR4RlnFJfesu_fG1tm4ZqvnejqBRHRSWDDD5czlG6vXmwZWRYUiED8ro4VnWG6o/s1600-h/c0vers_1960_1961.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 315px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTbVBqEjkEqO8qvtcZl4Hbq4PVB8KlczCnOis9ptjrAx_FKQctVm8flpHdgqcKrIA2EOwOK-w-QI6RuR4RlnFJfesu_fG1tm4ZqvnejqBRHRSWDDD5czlG6vXmwZWRYUiED8ro4VnWG6o/s400/c0vers_1960_1961.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276162492205460738" border="0" /></a><br />It turns out that the reason why is was covered on "Hot Type" is the <a href="http://www.taschen.com/pages/en/catalogue/architecture/all/03888/facts.arts_architecture_1945_54_the_complete_reprint.htm">Taschen reprint</a> that spans 10 years of the magazine, 1945-1954. (Havana is spelled with a "b" in Spanish). That show, as well as the <a href="http://www.seattletehran.com/">Seattle*Tehran Show</a> are the brainchild of local graphic designer <a href="http://www.creativehotlist.com/index.asp?linktarget=fullprofile.asp&indID=63667&portID=73353">Daniel Smith</a>. He has taken it upon himself to set up and curate gallery shows of screenprinted posters designed by local artists as compared to those of designers from "controversial" cities such as Havana and Tehran. I believe he's still in the search for the third tine of his triumvirate, though everyone keeps mentioning Pyongyang.<br /><br />While we had a scare getting out of Cuba, or I should say that<span style="font-weight: bold;"> I</span> had a scare getting out of Cuba because my Spanish is perfect, we had an amazing time. We met with several Havana artists, including <a href="http://www.cubanartspace.net/exhibitions/nov_1_07.htm">Eduardo Marin and Pepe Menendez</a> and visited the <a href="http://www.soycubano.com/taller_portocarrero/presentacioni.asp">Rene Portocarrero printshop</a>.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.seattletehran.com/">The Seattle*Tehran Show</a> is currently under way in Seattle at Verite Coffee. While the photography and most of the design credit belongs to my own blood, sweat and tears, my web programmer/art director/loving husband deserves my undying devotion for his work on it. (I'll make sure to repay him some other way since he already had my undying devotion simply for being awesome.)<br /><br />Here's a screenshot to whet your appetite. Lo and behold, Samantha brought a posse with her, complete with fiance, sister and mother. I have to admit, I was a little thrown off at first. Little did I know, there was no cause for alarm. Samantha's family was absolutely charming and extremely keen on design. Her mom, Carol Pruitt, has a great little jewelry/gift store, <a href="http://goodlifenw.blogspot.com/2008/08/her-dream-will-flourish-in-this-tiny.html">Flourish</a>, in Tacoma, WA.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRDtkYXEi7PHfBxSBRBCVxBmWlXjWhnsYjdrTTLvfkLlPb6rFaTh32mPQKUcNP5797d-cW3Xwq1gMKHCTt48lhJhFKJBOhgm1_VEzKJWZ5Y70D425qlrJnJyUTVGVR1hrBrydHoj70L7o/s1600-h/farmers+market,%2BFlourish,%2Band%2Byard%2B021.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRDtkYXEi7PHfBxSBRBCVxBmWlXjWhnsYjdrTTLvfkLlPb6rFaTh32mPQKUcNP5797d-cW3Xwq1gMKHCTt48lhJhFKJBOhgm1_VEzKJWZ5Y70D425qlrJnJyUTVGVR1hrBrydHoj70L7o/s400/farmers+market,%2BFlourish,%2Band%2Byard%2B021.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274703652600401410" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Samantha's blog, <a href="http://soon2bsonju.blogspot.com/">Soon2BSonju</a>, originally featured wedding ideas and now serves to showcase all sorts of cool finds. Here's a still of them exiting their wedding reception in Seaside, Florida. Judging from the pics, it was a really fun wedding. By the way, the wedding photography is by <a href="http://followellfotography.wordpress.com/">Robby Followell</a> of Mississippi, where the couple is from.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8XfgDMFDTzIgh6axtIEa-9O9PG-wA8XjkgkHdvyMrz9R_c8Z-IVaUxHKj3wUreLHTfWScDen3NCpFBux1C_14N_kHxoY3BLv60lbzdHoHOmCi6YEMSiksZWWx1yMwcJl-JdV5Glt0x8Y/s1600-h/chelsea_landon_wedding.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 278px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8XfgDMFDTzIgh6axtIEa-9O9PG-wA8XjkgkHdvyMrz9R_c8Z-IVaUxHKj3wUreLHTfWScDen3NCpFBux1C_14N_kHxoY3BLv60lbzdHoHOmCi6YEMSiksZWWx1yMwcJl-JdV5Glt0x8Y/s400/chelsea_landon_wedding.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274681183518637634" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Chelsea originally wanted a floral motif of peonies or hydrangeas and a fairly contemporary typeface and layout. As the wedding planning evolved and the location was set on the beach, we toyed with several nautical motifs. We finally settled on coral, which was also featured throughout the reception. The design process is ALWAYS different. Chelsea had a very strong idea to begin with but we still ended up in a completely different, yet happy place. We deal with brides just like Chelsea all the time. We also deal with couples who know exactly what they want and it actually works and then there are the couples who have no idea where to begin. It doesn't matter which kind of couple you are. That's what you pay us for; to design something you will love.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMEG_h4voAu-4-mirUUbtAybU1UUTLhCgLYoatrf3AvquUj93nCdhpx-JE-krE14KZJkm7HENghYuXEObyk9RIwoYn3N2mLqBelR3JlonExqFiBWbsN_rtAkfhv1-fWk5Dn-pnJmDynUM/s1600-h/chelsea2.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMEG_h4voAu-4-mirUUbtAybU1UUTLhCgLYoatrf3AvquUj93nCdhpx-JE-krE14KZJkm7HENghYuXEObyk9RIwoYn3N2mLqBelR3JlonExqFiBWbsN_rtAkfhv1-fWk5Dn-pnJmDynUM/s400/chelsea2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274321280317337602" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:85%;"><br /><br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjnm3euTx-loYttMiQjy8U0VEjiu435dkOWtoX26cibX_Jkk_i44F278UAVzObrGWen95DEVZIIuqtjox-dAoGKkk0ehoNXNpv9hcEeQZZzQCcSuZNKBkjWPXHaNIX-23y-mKLrkoClyw/s1600-h/chelsea3.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjnm3euTx-loYttMiQjy8U0VEjiu435dkOWtoX26cibX_Jkk_i44F278UAVzObrGWen95DEVZIIuqtjox-dAoGKkk0ehoNXNpv9hcEeQZZzQCcSuZNKBkjWPXHaNIX-23y-mKLrkoClyw/s400/chelsea3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274321275666349042" border="0" /></a> <span style="font-size:85%;"><br /><br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpJqzDjweZN65FuKTL8YaishZQnl3_i7Pn0SlCZeU_JmvUB73RGNRqynbe5g03XLqKqm5VM2GpgEX_s5YeoMMmb09ycIThD_HFhpwQW1gAWvh-pCB7o2MyNqeXeqM0p3qfaew3x8QnuGQ/s1600-h/chelsea5.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpJqzDjweZN65FuKTL8YaishZQnl3_i7Pn0SlCZeU_JmvUB73RGNRqynbe5g03XLqKqm5VM2GpgEX_s5YeoMMmb09ycIThD_HFhpwQW1gAWvh-pCB7o2MyNqeXeqM0p3qfaew3x8QnuGQ/s400/chelsea5.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274321277214334562" border="0" /></a>Design, printing and photography by Inkfancy.
